The Handmaid's Tale teaser International Women's Day Offred her story is our story Hulu

We’ve still got seven weeks until The Handmaid’s Tale premieres on Hulu, but the streaming service released a new teaser today, for International Women’s Day. Subtitled “Her Story is Our Story,” the teaser shows new footage of Offred (Elisabeth Moss) dressing in her traditional red garb as she flashes back to her life before she was a Handmaid. It’s also set to “Amazing Grace,” a reminder that the showrunners take their source material seriously.

The Handmaid’s Tale reread recently got to the part of the novel where Offred sings “Amazing Grace” to herself, as she ponders that she doesn’t remember the lyrics before they were changed. The hymn is slowed down ominously in this teaser, which also shows a protest—of mostly men, interestingly—that immediately brings to mind the Women’s Marches from January, as Offred, Moira, and other women flee. And there’s Luke, in the early days of love, and their daughter, in the early days of the Republic of Gilead.

The official synopsis:

Adapted from the classic novel by Margaret Atwood, The Handmaid’s Tale is the story of life in the dystopia of Gilead, a totalitarian society in what was formerly the United States. Facing environmental disasters and a plunging birthrate, Gilead is ruled by a twisted fundamentalism in its militarized “return to traditional values.” As one of the few remaining fertile women, Offred (Elisabeth Moss) is a Handmaid in the Commander’s household, one of the caste of women forced into sexual servitude as a last desperate attempt to repopulate the world. In this terrifying society, Offred must navigate between Commanders, their cruel Wives, domestic Marthas, and her fellow Handmaids—where anyone could be a spy for Gilead—all with one goal: to survive and find the daughter that was taken from her.

The Handmaid’s Tale premieres April 26 on Hulu.
